AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR

COMPETITIVENESS

(ASC)

VISIONS AND STRATEGIES

Objectives

The principal objective of ASC is to foster education and knowledge in subjects related to competitiveness by facilitating the exchange of information and ideas among educators, policy makers, and business people; and by encouraging and assisting research activities which advance knowledge about competitiveness practices and increase the available body of teaching and practice materials. The Society seeks to serve the needs of entrepreneurial scholars and intellectual managers. Specifically, through its conferences and publications, the society intends to effectively serve the needs of academicians interested in the practical application of organizational theory and practicing managers interested in the intellectual development of the discipline.

A further goal of the ASC is to develop a network of devoted individuals and working partnerships that help sustain American competitiveness in world markets. In addition, the ASC promotes world economic growth, unrestricted international trade, and healthy national economies on a worldwide basis that will simultaneously enhance the American posture in the global marketplace and contribute to the improvement of American living standards.

The ASC recognizes the need to bridge the gap between theory and practice. We at the ASC see ourselves as a dynamic organization that positions itself between the Conference Board and the Academy of Management. It is for this reason that entrepreneurial scholars and intellectual practitioners are encouraged to participate in and contribute to ASC conferences and publications.

Strategies to Achieve the Above Objectives

A.     In Academia

  1. Attract prominent authors to participate in the Society's conferences and publications.

  2. Enlarge the Society Network through:

a.    Addressing the needs of instructors in quality management, operation research, and industrial engineering fields.  Instructors in these fields must be sensitized to the existence of Phillip Crosby award and of the ASC as an instrument for enhancing research and practice in the quality area.

b.    Encouraging members of the Society and others to establish competitiveness courses and programs at their universities.  As the area of competitiveness becomes more mature, instructors will increasingly participate in the Society's activities.

 c.    Encouraging members to ask their respective universities to subscribe to the Society's publications.  Widening the circulation of our publications sustains the Society position as a world class professional organization.

d.     Attracting deans of major schools to attend our conferences through various incentives (e.g., Dean of the Year Award, Sponsorship, etc.) .  Deans have a tendency to encourage their faculties to participate in those organizations with which they are associated.

  1. Promote the award winners at least nine months before the conference.

  2. Observe our guidelines concerning the "Call for Papers."  These calls must be sent twice a year.  One should be sent just before the current conference and the other round should be sent in January/February of each year.

  3. Advertise in other organization's newsletters, home and abroad and on the Internet.

  4. Promote ASC Phillip Crosby Award on a timely basis.

  5. Establish ASC Michael Porter Award for competitiveness for scholars and practitioners.  Awards to scholars must be controlled to ensure the high quality of contributions to the area of competitiveness.

  6. Members of the Board of Directors should contribute to the conference by generating sessions and being actively involved in conference affairs.

  7. Encourage prominent scholars to serve on the Board and/or on the                       Advisory Council.

  8. Focus on current economic & technological issues especially globalization.

  9. Invite eminent  scholars  to  write  theme-setting   papers  and  publicize activity in academia.

 B.    In Business

  1. Change Phillip Crosby Award to Phillip Crosby Award of the ASC or at least "ASC" should be engraved on the award.

  2. Award winners should be required to have a one-hour session about their organization in the conference on the day they receive their award and should be asked to publicize the award in the business community and media.

  3. Institutionalize  relations with  the  previous winners  to  maintain  their interest in the Society and its activities.

  4. Provide  an  annotated  directory  of   "in house  experts  and previous winners" and distribute it to companies.

  5. Contact companies  to  sponsor  the  national   conference  and  other biannual or regional conferences.

  6. Publish press releases relative to the Society's activities and positions regarding pressing issues and/or events in the conferences.

  7. Attract top executives to serve on the Board or on the Advisory Council.

  8. Maintain and update a Web page for the Society and its publications.

  9. Promote the Society as an important source of knowledge and materials on competitiveness and globalization.
